QLD: New hydro power station opened in far north Qld
Queensland Energy Minister STEPHEN ROBERTSON has opened a $4 million hydro-electric
power station at Tinaroo Falls Dam in the state's far north.
It's the first hydro station built by the state's water supplier Sunwater to go on
line, and will supply 1.6 megawatts of electricity -- enough to supply more than 1,200
homes.
Mr ROBERTSON says the plant's construction reflects the government's commitment to
reducing greenhouse gas emissions through greater reliance on renewable energy sources.
He says it will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 8,500 tonnes a year
-- equivalent to taking 2,000 cars off the road.
Sunwater is carrying out a feasibility study to build a second hydro station at Burdekin
Falls Dam.
