NT: Up to 500 flood evacuees to shelter in Katherine

Up to 500 people airlifted from flooded Top End communities have been accomodated in
a tent city on the Katherine showground.

The refugees, mostly Aborigines from the remote communities of Kalkaringi, Daguragu
and Pigeon Hole, have been told they could be there for a month before they discover what
they have lost to widespread flooding in the Victoria River district.

Dozens are expected to remain camped on high ground near the Kalkaringi airstrip, 350
kilometres south west, until more planes can reach them tomorrow morning.
