Maximising your free time

Maximising your free time
Edition: New Sunday Times
Section: 1Klassifieds
Life is full of changes that can open sudden voids of free time in your life: retirement; career changes, having your kids leave the nest; graduating from school. Or just taking time out to find yourself. Here are some ways to maximise your free time:
1 Keep a journal about your life and how you'd like it to be. Be sure to describe the activities you are trying out in your free time so you can evaluate whether or not they are worth continuing to do. One way to appreciate life more is at the end of the day, before you go to sleep, write five things from that day which you are grateful. It may be hard to think of 5 things at first, but it is OK to repeat things from previous days, and you will find yourself looking for good things throughout the day to write down at night. This will improve your outlook on life. Try it!
2 Get yourself in top physical shape. Consult with your doctor about starting an exercise programme. A good starting point would be to walk for 30 minutes each day around your neighborhood for three days each week.
3 Join (or return to) a church or place of worship. This is a safe way to meet interesting people and get involved in your community. You don't even have to be all that religious.
4 Volunteer your time and expertise. Search the internet or the Yellow Pages for volunteer organisations in your area. Anyone, however inexperienced, can contribute something useful. You can work as little or as much as you want to.
5 Take up a hobby. Remember what brought you the most fun in childhood and try some acceptable variation on it. Some kids liked caring for animals, some liked tinkering with tools, some liked playing board games. You get the idea. There's a hobby for everyone.
6 Turn off the TV and read more books. Describe in a book journal what you've read, and what your reactions were. Join a book club.
7 Get a pet from the local animal shelter. You will save a life and become the center of the little critter's world.
8 Try gardening. Cacti are amazing, grow gorgeous flowers, and are almost impossible to kill. Or you could try herbs which are easir to grow, fun to use (in cooking or in crafts).
9 Declutter your home. This could take months, but it is essential to clear space for your new life. Get rid of anything you haven't used in more than a year: have a garage sale, donate to charity, or just recycle/ pitch it.
10 Go back to school either for fun or to broaden your skill base or both. Continuing-education courses at your local community college can be low-priced.
11 Try painting or something crafty. Some types of painting are acrylics, enamel, encaustic (wax), frescos, gouache, inks, oils, heat-set oils, water miscible oils, pastels and dry pastels, oil pastels, pastel pencils, spray paint (graffiti), tempera, watercolor and sketching.
12 Pull out a cookbook and try some new recipes. Look into your fridge and cupboards, then Google a recipe using those ingredients (for example, search for "broccoli pineapple jalapeno recipes").
13 Learn to meditate. Sit quietly for 20 minutes and breathe naturally. Count your breaths up to 10, then start over again. The idea is to have something on which to focus, so that you stay present and don't drift off mentally. After several weeks, you may begin to notice positive results in your life: more calmness, better concentration, more focus, more understanding of how negative the usual mental chatter can be.
Take your time trying stuff out. Something that initially seems hard may start to grow on you. Remember it isyour life, so make the most of it!
How to keep a diary and stick to it
Keeping a diary or journal is a great way to express your emotions on paper and treasure your experiences. Twenty years from now, you will wonder what you were doing then. At the end, it is a barometer of your personal and emotional growth.
* STEPS:
* Pick out a nice journal or notebook that reflects your personality.
* Write some information about yourself on the first page. Include a "reward if found" note, just in case it gets lost.
* Start your first entry by labeling the top with the weekday and date, the time, and possibly the place you are writing from.
* Take your diary wherever you go, and write an entry at least once a day. Write about everyday things.
* Start again if you have a break. Read your old entries and see what you think now in comparison to then.
* If it is a personal diary, make sure you keep it in a safe place.

NSW:Sydney commuters will pay $85k: Opposition
SYDNEY, Dec 30 AAP - The average motorist in Sydney's northwest will pay $85,000 in
tolls before Labor delivers a train line, the NSW opposition says.
The government's pre-election transport plan to deliver the northwest rail link by
2024 means motorists driving from northwest Sydney to the CBD every day will pay thousands
of dollars over the next 14 years, opposition leader Barry O'Farrell said on Thursday.
The opposition worked out motorists will pay an average of $85,000 in M7, M2, Lane
Cove Tunnel and Sydney Harbour Bridge tolls between now and 2024.
"If Labor had fulfilled its promise to deliver the northwest rail link by 2010, local
residents would be able to catch the train to work in the city each day," Mr O'Farrell
said in a statement.
"Instead, they are forced to endure hours in gridlocked traffic, paying escalating tolls."
If elected, Mr O'Farrell said his government would prioritise the northwest rail link
and start construction in the first term of government.

SYDNEY, Dec 15 AAP - A man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a Sydney homeowner
he wrongly accused of ignoring water restrictions.

Ken Proctor in the face as he was watering his lawn at Sylvania in October last year,
at a time when he was legally entitled to do so.
Mr Proctor allegedly turned the hose on Munter, after he called him a "stupid old goat"
for disregarding water restrictions, prompting a physical altercation.
Munter is accused of punching him, pushing him to the ground and kicking him.
In the NSW Supreme Court on Monday, Justice Roderick Howie was told Mr Proctor died
after suffering a heart attack as a result of the altercation.

U. Rhode Island prof: Internet campaigning entices young voters
University Wire
02-27-2008
(The Good Five Cent Cigar) (UWIRE) KINGSTON, R.I. -- Typing in the name of any presidential candidate on Facebook.com can yield some unusual results. Senators John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have their own personal profiles run by their campaigns, which list interests and work experience in the same way that any college student's profile would.
There is a twist, of course, as each candidate's job history is a bit more colorful than those of the college students who normally populate Facebook. For example, each candidate's current employer is listed as the United States Senate.
Professor Brian Krueger of the University of Rhode Island political science department sees these unusual Facebook profiles as just part of a larger and relatively new phenomenon: political campaigning over the Internet.
Krueger said that college students are in a unique position in regard to online campaigning. Having grown up with the technology, young voters are particularly Internet-savvy. But they are also more cynical about the political process, he said.
Krueger said that when young people are inspired by a candidate, their motivation meets an affinity for computers that older people may not have.
"That's one of the reasons young people have been so involved on the Internet," he said.
This presents a problem for political campaigns: How can they reach that audience? At first the answer seems obvious given the mass appeal of the Internet and how inexpensive it is compared to traditional political mailings and phone drives.
Krueger said that campaigns first tried sending out mass "spam" e-mails, but quickly found that this is ineffective.
"People treated it like spam, and what do you do when you see a spam e-mail? You delete it," Krueger said.
He added that campaigns even experienced a negative backlash from potential voters angered by the spam e-mails. To prevent this, modern campaigns only contact people who have signed up to receive Internet messages.
But this presents a new problem. If campaigns are only contacting people who sign up to receive messages, then those are people who already support the candidate. The campaign is essentially preaching to the choir.
Even more troubling, Krueger said, is the fact that no new voters are engaged in the political process this way. His research found that political campaigns tend to exclusively contact people who are already politically active, well-educated and involved in their communities.
Krueger said that while campaigns are not usually successful in recruiting voters directly over the Internet, they have come to rely on a peer-to-peer network. Members of a campaign's mailing list are encouraged to send information along to their friends and family about a certain candidate. The logic is that people are more apt to listen to a friend or family member than an anonymous political booster.
"This peer-to-peer mobilization is almost a two-step process," Krueger said. "You encourage the hardcore supporters to encourage their friends and you bring people in that way."
Krueger said that the Internet has proven its effectiveness at reaching young voters. He said that the YouTube debates on CNN, in which citizens submitted video questions to the candidates through the movie-sharing Web site YouTube.com, was the most watched debate by people under 30 years old.
He credited this to the user control that comes from being able to submit questions, but he pointed out that CNN's moderators chose which questions to accept.
"There's a certain illusion of user control," Krueger said. "Cultivation is important but parties and candidates don't want to lose control of their message."
Some political commentators feel that Internet interest will not necessarily correlate to votes in November. But Krueger pointed out that the 2006 elections saw a large increase in the number of young voters.
"I would expect that trend to continue," he said. "I don't think that this phenomenon will crash ... it has legs to last at least until November."

SA: Elder who traded sex for petrol jailed for eight years
By Todd Cardy
PORT AUGUSTA, SA, Aug 29, AAP - Shamefaced Aboriginal elder Winkie Ingomar stood motionless
as he was sentenced today to eight years jail for trading petrol to sniff for sex with
three teenage girls.
Ingomar, 52, had pleaded guilty to five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with
the girls, two aged 13 and one 14, between January and June last year.
The abuse took place in his caravan at a bush camp near the small indigenous community
of Yalata, 1,000km northwest of Adelaide.
Each time, the girls went inside the caravan alone to have sex or be touched by Ingomar
before taking and sniffing petrol he owned, the SA Supreme Court sitting in Port Augusta
was told.
Sentencing Ingomar today, Justice Margaret Nyland said he had exploited the serious
addictions of his victims for his own sexual pleasure and breached his position of trust
in the community.
"The fact that you engaged in sexual intercourse with these girls, knowing that the
girls intended to do so in order to have access to petrol to sniff, makes your offending
particularly bad," Justice Nyland said.
Ingomar, who was a supervisor of the community's vehicles, hung his head, clasped his
hands together in front of him and kept his eyes closed for most of the hour-long sentencing.
The court heard the abuse, reported to police by a female member of Yalata, had torn
the community apart and caused considerable stress on the girls who had moved from their
homes in shame, fear and anger.
"These were young girls," Justice Nyland said.
"You were an elder in the community and a lot older than them. They had known you all
their lives. They obviously trusted you. You should have protected and cared for them,
instead you abused them."
One of the 13-year-old girls said she felt like she was "hiding away inside" herself
and had now developed a fear of men and strangers.
Another said she was at times too frightened to sleep at night while a mother of a
victim described the emotional pain as if she had been "hit by a bullet in the chest".
A planned video-link for the people of the Yalata to watch the proceedings in Ceduna,
300km west of Port Augusta - in what was to be a first for a South Australian indigenous
community - was abandoned after a person of the community died.
Justice Nyland was scathing of the time it took for the case to come to court, saying
a lack of suitable and available interpreters had extended Ingomar's period of custody.
Ingomar needed an interpreter who spoke his native Pitjantjatjara language.
"These difficulties will continue to affect matters trying to deal with these problems,
unless something is done about it," she said.
Despite the delay, Justice Nyland said she treated Ingomar's pleas of guilty, which
were made last month in a plea deal as the case was listed for hearing, as sign he was
sorry and she believed he had a good chance of rehabilitation in prison.
Justice Nyland jailed Ingomar for eight years with a non-parole period of five years.

Qld: Brisbane's sci-fi invasion
By Daniel Johnson
BRISBANE, April 15 AAP - It had to happen one day - Brisbane has been invaded by beings
from outer space.
Characters from Star Trek, Star Wars and other interplanetary fantasies were among
the 10,000 sci-fi, comic book and video game fans who turned out today for pop culture
expo Supanova at the Brisbane RNA showgrounds.
Guests at the exhibition included Billy-Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian in
two of the Star Wars movies - The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi - Serenity's
Ron Glass and Lord of the Rings and Doom star Karl Urban.
Williams, who fielded questions from fans, was perplexed by queries from some of the
more ardent Star Wars devotees in attendance.
"You guys know more about Star Wars than I do," he said.
Williams, who is a self-confessed foodie, seems more interested in yoghurt than Yoda
these days and is keen to sample some Australasian culture.
"I was here promoting Empire Strikes Back - that was 27 years ago now - and I really
like it here. But I'm also looking forward to going to New Zealand," he said.
"I like New Zealand, I like their yoghurt. But you've got great fish here."
Glass, from Buffy creator Joss Whedon's television series Firefly and big screen spin-off
Serenity, said he enjoyed interacting with fans at events like Supanova.
"That's the only reason to come really ... to genuinely let the fans know that I appreciate
them as much, if not more than they appreciate me," he said.
Queensland Star Trek Fan Club president Mary Kemp said Supanova was important for the
club, as it introduced the long-running TV series and movies to a new generation.
"We're having our 30th anniversary this year, so we're here to promote our club and
also to let people know we still exist," she said.
As well as providing fans with the opportunity to meet their idols, Supanova also showcased
a wide array of comic books and video games.
Independent cartoonist Owen Heitmann, who publishes a comic called Basic Wage Kids,
said Supanova is a valuable event for fledgling artists looking to gain wider exposure.
Maria Symes, from new media college QANTM, said the event provided the college with
an opportunity to seek prospective students.
Supanova organiser Daniel Zachariou said he was thrilled with the turnout for the event.

Fed: Shelter unavailable for half of homeless people: report
EDS: embargoed until 0100 (AEDT) December 14, 2006
By Jane Bunce
CANBERRA, Dec 14 AAP - More than half of homeless people looking for temporary housing
each day are turned away, a new report has found.
About 304 people are rejected each day, and families with children are most likely
to be turned away.
But the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report has found the number
only represents two per cent of those requiring accommodation as 95 per cent of homeless
people stay in the same place for longer than one day. The remaining three per cent find
accommodation.
The Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) accommodates more than 12,300
people each day - about 7,400 adults or unaccompanied children and 4,900 accompanied children.
On an average day, 193 adults or unaccompanied children and 111 accompanying children
who request immediate accommodation are turned away, equating to 56 per cent of those
making a valid request.
"In order to put those turn-away rates in perspective, it is important to include the
number of people continuing their SAAP accommodation on an average day," Felicity Murdoch
of AIHW Supported Accommodation and Crisis Services Unit said.
"Given the large numbers of people already accommodated in SAAP each day, this means
that only two in 100 people needing immediate accommodations were unable to be accommodated."
Almost 30 per cent of those unable to find accommodation were of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander background, in line with statistics showing Indigenous Australians make
up 16 per cent of SAAP clients.
The report also found families had more difficulty obtaining SAAP accommodation than individuals.
About 57 per cent of those turned away were women, the report found, and 55 per cent
were aged under 20.
Overall, about six in 10 accompanied children whose parents were looking for a place
were turned away.
The report identifies possible reasons. These include it being easier to house a lone
person than a family group, insufficient family accommodation being available and because
families tended to stay longer once they had found a place.
The report also identified a substantial difference between the total estimated number
of homeless people identified by the Census and the number of people housed by SAAP, indicating
many homeless people do not request accommodation.
The "hidden" demand could include people who do not know how to access SAAP agencies,
who may not live near a SAAP agency or who may have given up trying to get help.

Small-film hits with big-studio roots
International Herald Tribune
02-27-2006
Next Sunday at the Oscars, directors, actors and producers from a handful of small films will pick up the majority of the big awards. The winners will talk about courage, about independence, about the women and men who were willing to step forward and triumph over the big Hollywood machine. So they will be sticking it to the man. Except, of course, they are the man.If you drill down into this year's best picture nominees, you will find that they are, at their core, studio properties. ''Brokeback Mountain'' is from Focus Features, a specialty arm of NBC Universal, the studio which also produced ''Munich.'' ''Good Night, and Good Luck'' is from Warner Independent Pictures, a unit of Time Warner, and ''Capote'' belongs to Sony Pictures Classics, owned by Sony. Only ''Crash,'' produced by Lions Gate Entertainment, has truly independent DNA. And before anyone decides that small is the next big thing for the studios, remember that for every demure belle of this year's ball there are dozens of films that started small and stayed that way.All of the little breakthrough movies of the past few years could be stacked on top of each other and still not match one huge global movie like ''Cars,'' from Pixar, which could make as much as a billion dollars if everything goes as planned when it is released in June. People in Hollywood love to talk about making serious movies for discerning audiences and then set about swanning their way through Oscar weekend, but that is not the business they are in. ''I am happy that the business includes movies like these,'' said Sean Daniels, a longtime producer and former manager of production at Universal Pictures, referring to this year's list of best picture nominees. ''But the business is bigger than this, and it has to be.''The real significance of this year's nominees is that Hollywood is placing bets all over the table to stay in business. At a time when everything is up for grabs distribution, technology, platform studios are morphing and eliding as fast as they can to hang onto their big, fat corner on the entertainment dollar, even if that means playing small. It just so happened that, in 2005, small worked. If the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was tough on Hollywood-as-usual, audiences were positively brutal, snubbing gorgeous Oscar-ready studio films, like ''The New World,'' ''Cinderella Man'' and ''Memoirs of a Geisha,'' in favor of movies that attack serious issues with grit and idiosyncrasy. ''This year, the industry did not manage to make a lot of big, expensive movies that the Academy liked,'' said Tom Pollack, a veteran producer at Montecito Picture. ''That may not be true next year.''The success of this year's group of serious films means that directors and producers who want to make something besides a sequel about a comic book character will have an easier time getting a meeting and even financing. ''The Internet has created a universe of niches, and I think that audiences are clearly saying that they don't like being treated as all part of the same group,'' said Peter Dekom, an attorney and co-author of ''Not on My Watch: Hollywood vs. The Future.'' ''Niche films are defining the industry, and I love it.''If ''Brokeback Mountain'' wins the Oscar for best picture, it will be profitable for years to come, just not as profitable as a three-picture tentpole franchise. So what is the economic model going forward? Will studios go global with a concept or make story-driven movies that do not cost a lot or continue to balance the two? Harvey Weinstein may not be a huge presence at the Oscars this year, but the industry is traveling a track laid down when he and his brother Bob built Miramax: smart movies, cunning marketing and a willingness to take on some artistic as well as financial risk. He said that there is no magic big or small that will lead to steady success. ''The only formula I have ever come across is to make good movies every time out, and that is the hardest thing to do,'' he said.

New Kent State U. dean lives for college culture
University Wire
06-29-2005
(Daily Kent Stater) (U-WIRE) KENT, Ohio -- Betsy Boze grew up at college.
Boze, who will begin her new position as Kent State University at Stark dean on July 15, is at home on any college campus because she was raised on one.
"I grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana," Boze said. "Until I was 6, we lived on the campus of Centenary College, where my father was the dean."
While most children are raised on unworldly games of dress-up and other dreams, Boze grew up in the world of academia.
"Having a college campus as my playground and growing up in an academic household clearly influenced what I have done and who I am," Boze said.
"Learning and education were always valued and an expectation. We always had globes, maps, magazines and reference books around the house. My parents took advantage of 'teaching moments' and in the dark ages before the Internet, referred me and my questions to the appropriate dictionary, encyclopedia or almanac."
Boze's academic growth was also nurtured outside her home through her childhood education.
"I attended an amazing small school as a child where the teachers were prohibited from telling a child that they can't do something," Boze said. "There were rules, but not limits to our ambitions and abilities. This attitude made almost everyone go on to really fascinating careers and lives."
Boze went on to attain a bachelor's degree in psychology from Southern Methodist University. College went by quickly for her, completing her undergraduate education in three years. However, she said she didn't miss out on anything.
"I was pretty focused on my studies," Boze said. "I lived on campus in the dormitory for two years and worked in the psychology department. I tried to do interesting things over the summer. I taught swimming, and one summer I worked in a gift shop in Lucerne, Switzerland."
After earning her bachelor's degree, Boze earned an MBA and a doctoral degree in marketing.
Boze is leaving her position as the dean of the School of Business at the University of Texas at Brownsville, a position she has held for 11 years, in order to come to Kent State.
Boze said she is ready to "accept the exciting challenges and opportunities of being campus CEO at Kent-Stark."
"This is a wonderful opportunity to work with the faculty, students, staff, alumni and community to make a great university a significant university," Boze said.
Boze said she believes her "many years of higher education administrative experience in combined universities and community colleges" will make her an asset to Kent State.
"My networks will help to raise the regional and national profile of Kent Stark," Boze said. "I am very engaged in every community where I have lived and plan to become involved with Canton and Northeast Ohio."
While she has engaged herself in communities in several states -- including Alaska -- as well as Germany, Italy and Japan, Boze said she is looking forward to moving to Canton.
"I really like what I have seen of the region and am enthusiastic about learning more about the area," Boze said.
Boze's enthusiasm for life and new places seems to have rubbed off on her three children. Her son Christopher is a fishing guide in Alaska, her daughter Broox is beginning a Ph.D. program in zoology at Colorado State University, and her youngest son, Lee-Gray, is a junior at the University of Montana and works for the National Park Service.
And perhaps a bit of her children's love for the outdoors has rubbed off on Boze.
"I love the outdoors and I hike, climb, canoe and ski," Boze said. "But more often I have to settle for roller blading or swimming laps."

Fed: Welfare group says unemployment rate skewed
MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - The official unemployment figures did not paint an accurate
picture of work situation in Australia, the Brotherhood of St Laurence said today.
Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today showed the unemployment
rate has remained steady at 5.1 per cent.
But Brotherhood executive director Tony Nicholson said the current definition that
one hour's work-a-week equals employment skewed the official rate.
"While working for one hour-a-week is better than not working at all, it's not enough
for anyone to survive on to meet current living costs," Mr Nicholson said.
He said the unemployment rate did not represent the full number of Australians out
of work or those wanting more hours of work or those who have given up on finding a job.
He said the ABS had a series of broader measures that included other groups of people
whose labour is not being used, such as underemployed workers and discouraged job seekers.
"These figures paint a more accurate picture of unemployment in Australia but unfortunately
gain little publicity," Mr Nicholson said.
"Based on the latest ABS figures from October 2004 the unemployment rate becomes twice
the size of the official unemployment rate when it includes underemployed workers and
discouraged job seekers."

Lee avoids prison term.

ASIA: Former Samsung group chairman Lee Kun-Hee has been handed a suspended prison sentence for tax evasion, but a South Korean court cleared him of a more serious charge of breach of trust. He was also fined $109 million.
"His wrongdoing is not serious enough to merit an actual prison term," said Judge Min Byung-Hoon at Seoul Central District Court yesterday.
